Two Pieces of Asemic Writing by Gareth Jenkins

It hovered out there above the Pennines, just for a second

Just part of the set, they said.

Photographer for both works: Jason Lam

Artist's statement: my concrete poetry focuses on the defamiliarisation of letters - reminding the viewer that letters are just shapes we have come to associate with particular meanings and sounds. Letters in my work take on abstract monolithic proportions, adrift and upended in the landscapes of my childhood. My letters have become lodged in my father's negatives, stitched together and backlit by fire.

billy cancel issues a flood alert by Billy Cancel

billy cancel issues a flood alert

from hunter’s point to     rame head
again again     in a dozen     repetitive
patterns     what once was     a dry dock of
half-finished projects     is now a radical
trance extension         swine were restless i
openly grappled     with the problem then liberated     myself from my tripod & joined
in the frenzy     slow-mo freeze
frame
frame     & gradually came to life gouged 2 holes in     a devon promenade
started a waste bin fire     so much space to congest     strange itch to re-edit         billy
asbo reports a storm warning     in full
effect     broken irregular     chopping
short     heavy seas     it’s the 29th so     dreams had
today     are not worth a
moment’s attention ain’t
signs of future reverse

have opened up a monster lead by Billy Cancel

have opened up a monster lead
upending the medium     after 2 glasses of
skimmish     easy to negotiate     vicious
coral heads from     the cross-crests &     openly
grapple with the     problem of     staying
giddy         totally over groomed
myself for ale & crust down to
the rivets     at professional slack
scene big chicken dance     night after
night rather banal     scaling up the
micro actions
     never quite got 100%
to flush the puddle         choice
another perhapser in     struggle valley or
1- pot swerving about     the joint     it’s all
honey or turd with me     sometimes get
chased through the covering darkness by
a pack of hell hounds with fiery tails glowing
will-o-wisp style     am the most powerful
supernova known to man 507 billion times brighter
than the sun     some basic facts     from an obscure life

got sewing machine leg by Billy Cancel

got sewing machine leg     on protocol
riddled surface     shortly after hope
spot
passed 2 lamps &     raucous
visceral ego scan did for me     complicated
the terrain with compact
tension interlocked figures     then
you unhooked the u-haul because
there was a big dance in newark featuring
billy cancel tormentor of the cat gut as
tormentor of the sheepskin billy
cancel         fictional detour shall lead to
     rapid unregulated change     most
places should see some     bulbous
purple pink
     then some tedious
malady     meanwhile back at     ranch
nowhereness     i’ll be quite at home with
the hit     unconcerned about quarrelling over
some pyrotechnic outburst         today our mulligan stew     is loaded for
bears     better still     you know someone who     knows someone who
can get us tickets in the oxygen section     i believe you but 1000s would not
